Matrix Environmental Technologies Inc. was founded in 1991 in Rochester, NY to provide environmental consulting and site remediation services.  We entered the remediation industry during its early growth phase when new technologies and remediation methods were evolving.  We contributed with innovative groundwater and air treatment methods that were patented.  Our service area during these early years was Upstate New York and Vermont, working on sites in the shadow of Love Canal, Kodak Park, Xerox and IBM Endicott.  We remediated hundreds of sites to closure in the 1990s and 2000s when petroleum underground storage tanks (USTs) were being replaced and gasoline filling stations upgraded to pay at the pump convenience stores.  It was a fast-paced time period with some sites changing ownership several times during an active cleanup.  Then came the gasoline oxygenate MTBE.

Matrix was developing a method to oxygenate groundwater plumes more effectively than air sparging or hydrogen peroxide, and without the need for vapor collection or handling of hazardous chemicals.  From a petroleum terminal in the NY Finger Lakes region to an UST site near the Mohawk River to a major oil storage facility on the Hudson River, we improved and perfected the method.  Monitoring data from these sites suggested that MTBE, considered recalcitrant at the time, was biodegrading under highly aerobic conditions.  Microbial analysis of soil cores and a microcosm study confirmed the biodegradation of MTBE to TBA under oxygenated conditions at the sites.  Soon after this work was published our technology was used for the large-scale demonstration of an aerobic MTBE biobarrier at the Naval Air Station in Port Hueneme, CA.  Over the past 26 years Matrix Oxygen Injection Systems have been used at hundreds of sites throughout North America.

Matrix celebrated 30 years of business over 4 decades, an uncommon achievement in the environmental industry.  Our core group has worked together on thousands of projects and cleaned up hundreds of contaminated sites, many in partnership with other consulting and technology companies.  Our skills and experience have taken Matrix to other disciplines in the environmental industry including vapor mitigation, industrial services and on-site water treatment services.
